Blog 6: Consider the Lobster

Updated: Apr 26, 2018

Foster Wallace attempts to connect with the audience by giving his opinion in a way that subtly injects his thoughts. He does not immediately come out with the stance of disliking the consumption of lobster. Instead, he describes the venue at first and begins to poke holes in the defense of the opposing view points. He mentions, without great detail, how many locals and festival goers find the idea of defending a bottom feeding crustacean that occasionally rips apart its live prey ridiculous. By doing this he addresses the opposition, but without giving it enough ground for the casual reader to agree with it. In his closing he again attempts to solidify with the audience that he one of those PETA protesters, but suggests that the reader to consider the lobster.
