Final Reflection

Project one was interesting to play around with because it reminded me a lot about the good times I had earning my Eagle rank and helping out with my community. I really enjoyed the opportunity to write out a narrative about something I actually cared about, instead of some strange uniform prompt. The writing came naturally to me, it just kind of flowed out which was a great feeling. If I had the chance to choose to do a project again, I’d probably pick this one just because of how much I enjoyed it. I didn’t have any struggles with it for the most part, though I was nervous that my writing wouldn’t be good enough, or that it was too casual. In high school we were taught to write as if our audience was well educated and preferred we write on the stiff and proper side. I suppose they forgot that in college the educators are real people too, not just stern elderly men with a penchant for the formalities of certain writing styles.

Project two was interesting. It was one of my first real research papers, and the first I’ve done here at FSU. I was interested in learning how to use the library’s resources and I really enjoyed browsing the database looking for sources. It amazes me how much knowledge can be accessed by students here. In high school you’d be hard pressed to find a student who could even find the library. Project two taught me how to write a research paper, but there were a few complications. I initially took the idea of a text far too literally and ended up focusing on a test, the LSAT as one of my main issues in the community I was studying. I was however, very interested in the Law Community here at FSU. I had already considered a career in practicing law and this gave me the opportunity to find out more about FSU’s law school and law school in general. I really liked the opportunities I had to conduct interviews. I had wanted to interview Dean of Student Affairs Dean B, and listening to her put me back on track away from literal texts. She told me about the renaming controversy and about how colleges are in a cutthroat struggle over law students, leading to more scholarship money for students who are interested in law like me. I was lucky enough to interview a professor at the law school here too who told me all about what it is to be a lawyer and how to give back to the community as one. Project two did however, have other difficulties. I had a hard time determining how to properly cite things in my essay as it was the first time I was doing it. I didn’t realize a works cited and an annotated bibliography were not one and the same. Overall though, I was very satisfied to see all I had done come to fruition. That huge word count made me feel pretty proud that I had been able to do it, and I managed to overcome my problems, I got back on track towards interesting issues in the community and I rewrote my annotated bibliography into a bibliography and works cited.

Project three was interesting because it allowed me to be a bit creative in how to do things. I chose a topic that was somewhat controversial, which was unlike me because I very much tend to avoid that sort of thing, but I felt like I had to do something about it. I’m very interested in history, I’m a history major after all, so when I heard about a campaign to remove a part of FSU I was a bit upset. I was quite proud of the flier I made as part of my genre, it took me a while to make it and took a lot of effort. I don’t have photoshop so I had to create the whole thing as a word document, and the main bottom picture left too much white space in the flier so I had to make some creative edits to make it look like the sky filled the rest of it. I linked my other genres into the flier. If you clicked on the Instagram icon it would take you to the Instagram page I created, if you clicked on the wix site it would take you to my short essay I wrote about Eppes, and the facebook icon linked to a page that was dedicated to the preservation of Eppes here at FSU.

My projects were a lot of work, but they had their benefits. I enjoyed all the assignments in the end and it made me feel proud that I had done so much. I think this class has allowed my writing style to evolve in a much easier, freer, and more open way. I wanted this class to be something more than the tedious comp II class I took in my dual enrollment college, and it surprisingly was. I’m glad I chose this class and I’m glad my projects turned out so well.
